I recently did a dog model call, and I wanted to share a few techniques you can do to get a dogs focus when photographing them.
1. Toys/Treats
Most dogs have a favourite toy or treat, if your dog knows sit awesome! But if not standing photos are always nice as well. Have the toy or treat close to the lens of your camera so it looks like the dog is looking at your camera, if the toy squeaks thats an added bonus for head tilt shots.
2. Have An Assistant
Either have an assistant or the owner help you out, they could be standing behind you holding something as a distraction. I find it so helpful as it leaves my hands free to play around with my settings when I need to, the owner is always a good one because dogs tend to always listen to their owner.
3. Noises
Having a toy that speaks, making noises with your mouth or having an app on your phone all does the trick. My personal favourite is a noise app for those hyper outgoing pups, it's something they've never heard before and it perks their interest.
4. Snowballs
If you live in a place that has snow, use it to your advantage. I find that most dogs love chasing snowballs or chasing the snow you kick around, very handy if you or the owner forgot a ball or their favourite treat.
5. Sticks
Sticks are also another good option if toys or treats were forgotten, most dogs love to chase and focus on a good stick. I also use sticks if I want the dog to look a certain way, I get a long one and hit a nearby tree. It usually gets their attention right away.
